Curtains, National Trust Tyntesfield

Since 2008 the studio has been involved in the assessment and treatment of a variety of textiles from Tyntesfield, a National Trust property near Bristol.  In 2017/18 the studio carried out extensive conservation work on two pairs of green silk damask curtains that hang in the Anteroom of the house.  The treatment included cleaning and stabilisation of the green damask outer fabric, green wool lining and green velvet borders with silk-wrapped cord trim.  This necessitated the dismantling of the curtains and the removal of the many previous stitched and patched repairs that were failing and unsightly, and the heavily soiled and degraded cotton domette interlinings.  The stabilisation process involved securing the original materials to full backings of new colour matched fabrics, the insertion of new fabric interlinings and the application of studio dyed conservation net to protect the vulnerable front faces and borders of the curtains.
